Careysville Fishery

Careysville Fishery is situated on the River Blackwater in County Cork, Ireland. With 1.75 miles of double bank salmon fishing and 26 named pools it is considered by many to be one of Ireland’s finest salmon fisheries. Wading is excellent and there is a great variety of fly fishing to suit both the most competent of fly casters and complete novices.
Careysville has been in the ownership of the Duke of Devonshire’s family since the 1930s. The fishery is discretely situated within a 160 acre private estate, half a mile from the nearest road. With its beautiful scenery, warm hospitality and enviable catch records, anglers from near and far, return again and again. There are two full time Ghillies on the fishery. They are available to offer help and advice as well as one to one tuition, if required.

Careysville is predominantly a fly fishery offering great streams, pools and glides. Bait fishing is not permitted however spinning is allowed during adverse conditions at the discretion of Head Ghillie Patrick Devennie.
view_of_islandsThe fish runs can vary but typically:
Spring run from February to June. Fish average 8 – 9 lbs, with larger fish up to 20 lbs April to June.
Grilse from June onwards.
Autumn run from mid August to the end of September. Fish vary from 6 – 20 lbs, relying on good water levels to run.

For Spring and Autumn fishing we recommend 15ft fly rod with full sinker/full inter or multi tip line.
In Summer, 13 – 14ft fly rods (low water) and even single handed rods (very low water) can be used with a sink tip or full floater. Flies and equipment can be discussed with the Head Ghillie once a booking is made.
Catch limits are set by the Fishery Board and are subject to change, so please contact Careysville for updated information. Rod licences and tags will be provided.
